Change is a slut, and you’re all welcome

Posted by seanbrown2020

Have you heard people refer to our current COVID realities as “the new normal?”. I’ve recently been exposed to this asinine vestige of verbal vomit. Too harsh? meh

Here’s the deal: America is in a kind of transition. What comes after this time will not be indistinguishable from what came before it. The only fact that we have to accept, is that the “times they are a changin’.”

COVID cannot last forever. Let-That-Soak. Even the protests and uprising across our nation are not intended to last forever (the “arc of the moral universe” and what not). Instead all these things have.. come to pass. Which begs the question: 1) What is normal, and why do we want one so bad?

Normal by definition, according to Merriam Webster (harlot that he is), is defined as “conforming to a type, standard, or regular pattern”. A regular pattern. Many of us are waiting for something consistent and above all stable. I get it. People want certainty. People want to know what work, school, life etc will look like. Who wouldn’t?

Yet at the risk of sounding unpopular and privileged, I must assert that the uncertainty in our nation right now, provides all people a kind of opportunity. (I acknowledge that what I’m about to say, to those who are struggling economically or with their, or a loved ones, health is almost impossible.) The opportunity for those with the means to lay hold of it, is this:

  1. Imagine your next life
  2. Take inventory of your current life
  3. Decide to be uncomfortable
  4. Choose your next life (decide that you want it)
  5. Research and learn the steps to achieve it
  6. Begin to act

We want to change. Right?

I begin from the premise that the overwhelming majority of us, want more. In response to that assumption, I say “DO THE THINGS”. Everyone who desires greater than what they have should see steps 1 – 5 as a call to action. Come out of this pandemic a different person. Change the way you think and act. Create an actual plan for your life. Take control. And, if you are physically unable to chart a new path, or if you are so emotionally and mentally spent from just trying to survive; all I need you to do, is imagine. Fo real tho. Imagine what better looks like. I know this sounds real self-help-ish. Trust me for a second. All actions, particularly life altering actions, start with a thought. Can you think “better”, click your heels, and voila? Nope. But you can train your mind to explore alternatives. This exploration is the first step to action. This is a small, free, action that will open your eyes to the small opportunities of change that exist. Your path may start with a thought, then suggestion or conversation, a book, maybe a YouTube video, but eventually you take risks and things will start to evolve with you.

Or, maybe you’re right, and this sounds too much like the power of positive thinking. You know quarantine got your jeans fittin’ too tight to be this spacey. To you I say, “What has doing life your way (according to your regular pattern) gotten you to this point?” If the answer is – not enough, then take that easy first step… Imagine. Imagine a lot.

“You know very well

Who you are

Don’t let ’em hold you down

Reach for the stars

You had a goal

But not that many

‘Cause you’re the only one

I’ll give you good and plenty “

The Notorious BIG, Juicy

A fascinating discussion is worth comment. I do think that you ought to publish more on this subject matter, it might not be a taboo subject but usually people do not discuss such topics. To the next! All the best!! Marjie Jay Radferd
